New York City: Sweet and Savory

on August 8, 2011

So I haven’t seen my little cousin, Samantha aka Sam, for almost 10 years. Her parents, gave her permission to travel alone to NYC to visit me :D How trusting of them!

16 Handles @ 153 Second Ave (Between 9th & 10th St)

Our first stop of the night: FROYO. Since it was kinda late on a weekday, I wanted to take her to see St. Marks and to try pinkberry/red mango – but those shops were closed. 16 Handles to the rescue! It was a cool summer night. We got our cups, picked our flavors and toppings, chomping away! We were one of the few stragglers before closing time. Cashier was nice enough to let us order and sit.

Mines was a concoction of lychees, blackberries, mochi, mandarin oranges, kiwi, and captain crunch! I think i picked a few different froyo flavors too, ranging from lychee to regular flavored froyo.

Pommes Frites @ 123 2nd Ave

Our second stop was at a small hole in the wall fries shop a block down! Authentic Belgian fries at its best! It’s always my go-to frites place when I’m around St.Marks. Crispy frites and lots of different sauces to sample. One of my favorite is the sweet mango chutney. The Vietnamese pineapple mayo, parmesan peppercorn, roasted garlic mayo, and sun dried tomatoes mayo are also my favorite sauces. We went home after to rest up for the weekend :)

Junior’s @ 386 Flatbush Avenue, Brooklyn
On the train going home, we decided on cheesecake for dessert. What better place than to visit Junior’s Cheesecake in the original Flatbush Avenue location in Brooklyn. I knew I had wanted the cheese steak sandwich when I sat down. I really liked their bread. Soft yet sturdy, as it did its job in holding up melted cheese and shaved steak. However, I didn’t care for the wedge potato fries.

The bacon and cheeseburger was a mouthful. We were both stuffed by the end of our meals. Patty was cooked to our liking of medium. It’s not a fancy burger and I appreciate that because it doesn’t have to be.

Even though there was bad publicity with mice seen roaming around the cheesecake fridge many years ago, the quality of their cheesecake is still on par. We ordered the strawberry shortcake and carrot cake cheesecake to sample. Our NYC pass gave us 2 original cheesecakes for free. Luckily, we didn’t get sick =P The strawberry shortcake was yummy! Strawberry jam were layered between moist vanilla cake and strawberry flavored cheesecake.

I can taste the carrot and spices in this delicious moist cake. The cream cheese frosting was not too sweet. Perfect pairing for carrot cake! A definite must try to both these cheesecakes.

Since we were eating later than our normal dinner times, the restaurant was quieter with less people. Train access was right across the street. The area is well lit and on a main road. Service was okay. A very casual dining experience with delicious greasy food.

Sprinkles Cupcakes @ 780 Lexington Avenue
On our way to MOMA, I happened to pass by Sprinkles, the first cupcake bakery ever established in America. WOW. From watching cupcake wars on Food Network, I had to stop inside for a red velvet. Cake batter was delicious. Soft, moist, and not too crumbly. The cream cheese frosting was on point. Sweet enough to satisfy any cupcake enthusiast! Definitely can’t wait to drop by for their other flavors. Packaging was cute too!

Patsy’s Pizzeria @ 67 University Place
My younger sister came up to New York for a reunion weekend with Sam and I. It was good times :D I took them to my favorite pizzeria in Union Square. Their pepperoni and basil pizza is to die for! Each slice is crispy, cheesy, and mouthwatering delicious. The roni, especially is very addictive. When you add a basil to each slice, the aroma and taste enhances 3x more. I’ve been to Patsy’s often last summer and really love this location. Always on par with water refills, friendly service, and clean up. I’ve had the caesar salad here as well, but I would just stick to the pizza. Try not to eat the bread! Or else your tummy space will just be filled up too quickly on meaningless carbs.

All in all, a great weekend with family. Never missing a sweet and savory moment in life with them.
